About
India Gate
Situated at the end of Rajpath, India Gate is the pride of the nation.
Initially known as the All India War Memorial, this 42 metres high arch was
built to commemorate 70,000 Indian soldiers who lost their lives in the
World War I. The India Gate bears the names of more than 13,516 Indian and
British soldiers killed in the Northwestern Frontier in the Afghan war of
1919. Now the monument is the site of spectacular Republic Day parade
organized every year in January 26.
The foundation stone of the monument was laid by HRH, the Duke of Connaught
in the year 1921 and was designed by Edwin Lutyens. India Gate was dedicated
to the nation 10 yeas later by the then Viceroy, Lord Irwin. The Amar Jawan
Jyoti which was added after the India's independence is another important
memorial here. The memorial in the form of an eternal flame, burns round the
clock to pay homage to the Indian soldiers who were killed during the
Indo-Pakistan War in 1971.
The wonderful monument stands on a low Bharatpur red stone base, that rises
in stages to a massive moulding. At the top posotion 'INDIA' is inscribed on
both sides , flanked by 'MCM' and 'XIX' to the right. The shallow domed bowl
at the top of the monument was built with an intention to be filled with
burning oil on anniversaries, but this act is performed rarely.
India Gate offers a lot in the name of fun and joy. Surrounded by lush
green lawns, the monument is a famous picnic spot. Boating in the nearby
lake is a major attraction, in addition the children's park attracts
