About
Jaigarh Fort
Jaigarh Fort, meaning the fort of victory, is the most spectacular of three
forts in Jaipur. Built in the year 1726 by Sawai Jai Singh, this fort served
as the royal treasury of the Kachwaha for several years. One of the best
examples of full-fledged citadels, the Jaigarh Fort was constructed for the
defensive purposes. The fort is based on a cliff and is flanked by massive
battlements, which have inside walkways.
The structure of the fort is quite simple and similar to other forts and
palaces of Jaipur. The fort has no palace or other delicate structures,
which clearly indicates the intention of Sawai Jai Singh, that it was built
mainly as a military structure. Jaigarh Fort is among a few military
monuments of medieval India. It has residential structures, a granary, a
cannon foundry, several temples and a tall tower. The major attraction of
the fort is a massive cannon - Jaivana, which is the largest wheeled cannon
of the world. Other attractions of the fort include the fortifications,
museum and the ingenious water storage system.
The watchtower - Diwa Burj, offers spectacular views of Jaipur
city and the nearby Amber Fort. The water supply system of the fort and its
storage reservoirs are marvelous examples of engineering. The water supply
arrangements were made in such a way that the fort could withstand long
sieges without water scarcity. The fort houses a museum which has an
interesting collection of historic artifacts, arms and ornaments. Jaigarh
Fort was opened for public viewing in 1983.
